You're looking at one of Alaska's premier salmon fishing experiences right here on the Kasilof River. This isn't your typical crowded charter boat situation – we're talking about a full 8-hour private adventure where it's just you, your group of up to 4 people, and one of our top-rated local guides who knows every bend, hole, and salmon run on this river like the back of their hand. From May through September, when the salmon are running strong, we'll put you on fish while you soak in some of the most beautiful scenery Alaska has to offer. Whether you're a seasoned angler or picking up a rod for the first time, our guides tailor the whole experience to your skill level.
The Kasilof River flows crystal clear from Tustumena Lake down to Cook Inlet, creating perfect conditions for both salmon and the anglers chasing them. Your day starts early when we meet at the boat launch, gear up, and head out onto water that's been producing world-class salmon runs for generations. The river's got character – shallow riffles, deeper pools, and classic salmon holding water that changes with the tide and season. You'll spend the day drifting prime stretches where sockeye and king salmon stage before their spawning runs. Our boats are built for this river, stable enough for everyone to fish comfortably but nimble enough to work the best spots. The scenery alone is worth the trip – snow-capped peaks, dense spruce forests, and that wild Alaska feeling you just can't get anywhere else.
We specialize in drift fishing here on the Kasilof, and there's good reason for that – it's hands down the most effective way to cover water and put salmon in the boat. Your guide will set you up with the right tackle for the conditions, usually running 20-30 pound test with weights and hooks sized for the species we're targeting that day. The technique is all about reading the water and letting your bait drift naturally through the salmon lies. We'll anchor up above productive runs and work our way through systematically, adjusting depth and presentation until we find what the fish want. It's active fishing – you're constantly adjusting, re-casting, and working different depths. Our guides have been perfecting these techniques for years and they'll have you fishing like a pro by the end of the day. All gear is included, from rods and reels to tackle and bait, so you just need to show up ready to fish.
Sockeye salmon are the bread and butter of Kasilof River fishing, and these bright silver rockets will test your skills every time. They typically run 6-10 pounds and fight like fish twice their size, making blistering runs and aerial displays that'll get your heart pumping. The peak sockeye run usually hits in July, when thousands of these fish push through the river system headed for their spawning grounds. They're incredibly selective feeders, so timing and presentation have to be perfect – that's where having an experienced guide makes all the difference. What makes sockeye special here is their incredible table quality. Fresh from the ocean, these fish are firm, bright red, and absolutely delicious whether you're grilling, smoking, or preparing sashimi-style.
Chinook salmon, the kings of the river, show up earlier in the season and bring serious firepower to your fishing rod. These bruisers range from 15-40 pounds, with the occasional monster pushing even bigger. King salmon are aggressive feeders and when they hit, you'll know it immediately. They make powerful runs, use the current to their advantage, and have the stamina to fight for 10-15 minutes or more. The spring king run typically peaks in May and June, making this the perfect time to target trophy-sized fish. Landing a Kasilof River king is something you'll remember for the rest of your life – they're smart, strong, and absolutely beautiful fish. Plus, king salmon meat is rich, buttery, and considered by many to be the finest eating salmon in Alaska.
At $1,000 for up to 4 people, this private combo trip delivers incredible value for a full day of guided salmon fishing on one of Alaska's most productive rivers. You're getting personalized instruction, all the gear you need, and access to fishing spots that only locals know about. The season runs May 1st through September 1st, but the best dates fill up fast – especially during peak salmon runs in July. This is the kind of Alaska fishing adventure that creates lifelong memories, whether you're celebrating a special occasion, planning a guys' trip, or introducing someone to the sport. Don't wait too long to secure your dates because when word gets out about hot fishing, these private slots disappear quickly. Give us a call and let's get you set up for the salmon fishing trip of a lifetime right here on the beautiful Kasilof River.
Kings are the giants of the salmon world - these bruisers can push 30+ pounds, though most we catch run 15-20 pounds and 24-30 inches. They're built like silver torpedoes with black spots covering their backs, fins, and tails, plus distinctive black gums. Kings stay deep and are light-sensitive, so they hug the bottom during bright days. Early morning and evening bites are your best bet. May through July gives us the strongest runs here on the Kasilof. What guests love is the raw power - these fish will test your drag and your patience. The orange-pink meat is top-shelf eating too. Since they're bottom huggers, use weighted gear and get your bait down deep. My go-to trick is trolling with herring or plugs, keeping everything near the riverbed where the big ones cruise.

Also called reds, these are the salmon that turn bright crimson when they hit freshwater to spawn. Out in the ocean they're silver with blue-green backs, but that dramatic color change makes them easy to spot once they're in the river. Most sockeye we see run 4-8 pounds and 18-24 inches, though bigger ones do show up. They're strong fighters that like to stay deep and close to the bottom. Best fishing happens May through September when they're making their spawning runs. What makes sockeye special is the meat - deep red, rich flavor that's perfect on the grill. They can be picky eaters, so I usually start guests with a #6 wet fly and adjust from there. Pro tip: watch the water temperature. When it hits 60 degrees or higher, they'll take dry flies more readily.
